Brief History of the Indiana Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges (InMATYC)
The Indiana Regional Mathematics Consortium (IRMC) was incorporated as an Indiana Not-For-Profit Corporation in 1976. Marvin Bittinger, Professor and book author, was one of the original 19 members of the Board of Directors. The IRMC adopted its current name - the Indiana Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges (InMATYC) - in 2001 to more closely align its name with the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC). Currently, the InMATYC has four officers and a 9-member Board of Directors.
The original purposes of IRMC were to:
- to promote excellence in mathematics instruction in the post- secondary
institutions of Indiana and surrounding states, and
- to provide a forum for the common concerns of those institutions relating to the mathematics normally taught during the first two years.
With the name change to InMATYC, the updated purposes of InMATYC are:
-
to promote excellence in mathematics instruction and learning in the post-secondary institutions; public or private, of Indiana, and
-
to provide a forum for the common concerns of those institutions relating to the mathematics normally taught during the first two years of college.
One of the first meeting of the IRMC was a joint meeting with the Illinois Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges. InMATYC hosted, along with the other AMATYC Mid-West affiliates, the 18th Annual meeting of AMATYC held in Indianapolis, IN.
The InMATYC meets two times each year with the Fall meeting usually located near the central part of the state and the Spring meeting held in the northern or southern part of the state. The meetings consist of several presentations and a business meeting, followed by a Board meeting.
The InMATYC awards one or two student scholarship each year.
